Here at Rider, we've got a lot of opportunities for students to pitch in on the fight for the planet. If you're unsure of where to start, check out this list.
1) Participate in our Terracycle Brigades
Terracycle is a local company that specializes in recycling hard-to recycle materials. We currently participate in three of their programs.
The Personal Care Brigade, which recycles items like used makeup containers, soap dispensers, and lotion bottles. Check out the collection buckets, located in select areas in the residence halls, for more details.
The Oral Care Brigade, which recycles used toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, floss containers, and more. These items can be dropped directly into the same buckets as for personal care.
The Writing Utensil Brigade, which collects used pens, markers, and pencils. These cans can be found in each of the academic buildings.
2) Recycle! For plastic, think 1, 2, & 5
There are plenty of recycling buckets around campus. However, only drop plastics marked with a 1, 2, or 5 into the bins. Just check the recycling symbol on whatever plastic you’d like to recycle. And of course, we can take paper and cans where appropriately marked.
3) Use a reusable water bottle and fill up at our filling stations
Look for Elkay water bottle filling stations all over campus and fill up your reusable water bottles with free, clean, filtered water. It’s cheaper, healthier, and better for the environment than buying bottled water.
4) Participate in our Free Shop
The Office of Sustainability loves free clothes. Several times a year, you can catch us giving away LOTS of free clothes on campus. We’re also happy to collect your used unwanted clothing so we can add them to our shop and keep them out of the landfill. Keep an eye on our social media accounts for when we will hold our next shop.
5) Join the Green Team
A group of volunteer students called the Green Team collaborate with the Eco-Rep team and the Office of Sustainability to continually improve the sustainability of the campus environment. Members receive a stylish t-shirt, get first dibs on forthcoming events and initiatives, and assist at events such as Campus Sustainability Day, America Recycles Day, and Earth Day. The Green Team meet about once a month, where they participate in their own sustainably-minded crafts and projects. For more info, email greenteam@rider.edu.
6) Eat Less Meat
Protein sources such as nuts, tofu, and beans have a very low overall carbon footprint. In fact, the production of tofu has less than 10% of the greenhouse gas emissions of beef when matching grams of protein.
7) Attend Our Events
The Office of Sustainability prides itself on fun and informative events. Woods walks, film screenings, arts & crafts events, trivia nights, bonfires... the list goes on and on. And of course, we participate in Beach Sweeps, Campus Sustainability Day, and Earth Day. With so many things to do, it may be tough to keep up! Sign up for our email list at broncsgogreen@rider.edu to keep yourself in the loop on all eco-happenings!
